Designing for gravity, not just aesthetics.

Last week, I wrote that my background in media production makes me think about spaces in scenes, momentum, and emotional flow. A few people asked what that actually means in practice.

To me, one of the biggest mistakes many developers make is treating community spaces as finished products instead of living systems.

Beautiful lounge.
Good furniture.
Nice lighting.

But no story.

The space functions as a transitional area — not a destination. People pass through it, but they don’t emotionally attach to it.

In film production, every scene exists to move the story forward. Spaces work the same way.

A great café inside a building shouldn’t just serve coffee.
It should create encounters.

A lounge shouldn’t just look premium.
It should create rhythm.

Even small things completely change the emotional energy of a place:
Music and noise.
Artwork and movement.
The type of crowd.
Human warmth.
Animals and plants.

These invisible layers shape behavior more than people realize.
The spaces people return to are rarely the most perfect ones. They’re the places where something meaningful happened.
A conversation.
A memory.
A feeling.

That’s what gives a place gravity.

What’s a place you keep going back to, purely for the energy of it?
